ShreveportBlackRestaurants.com is a new website produced by the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau, in collaboration with Loving This Life Jada, that aims to serve as a one-stop-shop for anyone seeking information on Black-owned food businesses in Shreveport-Bossier. The site launched on Tuesday, July 7, with nearly 100 businesses currently listed. Black food business owners who’d like to see their businesses listed on the site may do so by completing this form (be sure to select “Yes” when asked if your business is Black-owned).
Here’s an interview with Jada Durden, of Loving This Life Jada, about how her viral Facebook post set in motion the creation of this new site:
Chef Hardette Harris, chef and owner of Us Up North Kitchen, also filmed an interview sharing her thoughts on the website – as well as an update on the status of her excellent restaurant – which may be viewed here:
“I saw a need to be able to identify these Black-owned businesses in order to be able to support them,” Durden said. “So, I reached out to the Tourist Bureau and said ‘let’s get this website going.’ It’s been a collaborative partnership.”
It also should be said that many of the Black-owned restaurants on this list bear historical significance to the region. From Orlandeaux’s Cafe, which descends from the legendary Freeman and Harris Cafe founded in 1921, to Chef Harris’s Us Up North Kitchen, which created and serves the Official Meal of North Louisiana (as adapted by the State of Louisiana in 2015!), no trip to Shreveport-Bossier would be complete without sampling the flavors and experiences created by these restaurateurs.
