Each year when June rolls around, “in the know” foodies in Shreveport-Bossier dig out their five-gallon buckets and head for a handful of nearby you-pick farms in communities like Haughton, Keithville and Hosston. Most of our region’s you-pick farms are berry farms specializing in blueberries and blackberries, though some also feature vegetable gardens as well as uniquely local crops like muscadine grapes or mayhaws.

June is always a great time to visit a you-pick farm. This year, as America continues to deal with the effects of COVID-19, you-pick farms make for an especially stress-free road trip: they’re wide-open spaces with little-to-no contact between employees and consumers. Plus, they’re a great way to get loads of berries for ridiculously low prices.

Here are a few of our favorite you-pick farms within a short drive of Shreveport-Bossier:

Blueberry Hill in Haughton is a you-pick berry farm specializing in blueberries and blackberries.

Blueberry Hill

Haughton, LA 71037

Why we love it: Enjoy the peace and quiet of the rural countryside while picking blackberries and blueberries from the heavily laden bushes. This year, a pound of you-pick blueberries will sell for just $1.75 at Blueberry Hill, which is about 75% off what you’d pay at a grocery store. They also have more vegetables than most you-pick farms, but anyone interested in a particular veggie—like squash or cucumbers, for example—should call or check the Facebook page before making the drive, as supplies are limited.

Lenox Acres

6464 Vardaman Rd
Keithville, LA 71047

Why we love it: Truthfully, we haven’t visited Lenox Acres just yet, but that’ll be corrected soon. They’ve got 1,000 blueberry bushes as well as blackberries and even muscadines. June is a great time to harvest blueberries, but you’ll want to set your sites on August or September for those hard-to-find muscadines. Located about 30 miles south of Shreveport, Lenox Acres is a bit of a drive for locals, but the drive looks simple enough.

In case you’re wondering: Lenox Acres also appears to be taking COVID-19 very seriously, and have a great description of their temporary rules and enhanced sanitation processes here.

McKinney Hill Farm

6510 Camp Clara Hugh Rd, Hwy 71
Hosston, LA 71043
(318) 287-339
Visit the Facebook page

Why we love it: If you follow only one you-pick farm on Facebook, make it McKinney Hill Farm. I love to follow along with the sweet-natured farm updates (“Getting the plastic mulch beds ready to plant the tomatoes and peppers! Praise God for a young grandson!”). Also, it’s noteworthy that these folks also operate a farm stand out of an old Methodist church house.

Hosston is located on the Boom or Bust Byway. If you’re headed that way, consider downloading the Boom or Bust Byway mobile app in the App Store or Google Play. As the app user drives the Boom or Bust Byway, the app points out historic sites and other points of interest along the way. It’s free!
