One of the most dramatic and fun Carnival season events in Shreveport-Bossier is also one of its most mysterious. The annual Battle of the Bands that takes place on the steps of Shreveport Municipal Auditorium following the Krewe of Harambee MLK Day Mardi Gras Parade can be one of the loudest, boldest, most colorful events in the city – when the weather cooperates. It’s also one of the hardest local Carnival events to discover; you’ve kind of gotta just know about it. If you Google “Krewe of Harambee Battle of the Bands,” for example, Google’s got nothing. But it’s worth seeking out.

The parade will roll at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, and the Battle of the Bands typically takes place around 2:30 p.m. If you’re already planning to attend the parade, just head towards Shreveport Municipal Auditorium when the parade reaches the head of Texas Street. The theme of this year’s parade is “Harambee Goes to Wakanda.” Here’s more 2019 parade coverage from KTAL 6 News.
As the bands assemble on the auditorium steps, dressed in their ornate attire and seemingly undaunted from performing in the parade, the Krewe of Harambee’s other signature marching units will often put on a show for the gathering crowd. If the stilt walkers from New Orleans show up, just get comfortable, because you’re in for a show. If you’re a photographer, this musical performance on the steps of legendary Shreveport Municipal Auditorium is a must-attend.
