Brittany Shaw’s Cake Jars Are a Hit in Shreveport

Maybe you’ve seen the photos circulating on social media: decadent-looking little layered cakes in Southern flavors like honey bun cake, cookies n’ cream and banana pudding served in clear, eight-ounce jars. Caked by Britt, the project of an aspiring culinary entrepreneur named Brittany Shaw, creates the cakes, which are sold exclusively at Bon Temps Coffee Bar in Shreveport’s Red River District.

Caked by Britt is a hobby for Shaw, who aspires to open a bakery of her own. In 2016, she began baking cakes for friends and family, and her efforts were well-received. This August, a friend shared the idea of cake jars with Shaw, and it’s been a roller coaster ride since. Marcus Mitchell, owner of Bon Temps Coffee Bar, caught wind of the buzz on social media and reached out to Shaw to see if she’d consider making the cake jars available to Bon Temps customers. On a recent Monday morning, she dropped off a shipment of cake jars at 7 a.m. and sat down to have coffee with a friend. By the time her meeting ended, the cake jars were sold out.

“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and joy,” Shaw said. “My goal is to have a bakery within the next couple of years.”

In the meantime, she’s been traveling, learning and researching. Recently, she traveled to Florida for cake-making classes, and has been planning cake jar flavors for fall involving classic flavors of the season like sweet potato, pumpkin and pecan. One day, she’d like to offer the kinds of classes that she’s taken in Florida to local aspiring cake artists.

The great thing about Caked by Britt’s cake jars – aside from the fact that they’re delicious – is their size and construction. Larger than a snack, but smaller than a slice of cake, they’re the perfect size for a treat. More cake would be too much, less wouldn’t be enough. Spooning through the layers is also a treat, especially in the case of the rich, gooey honey bun cake (which Brittany suggests pairing with a cup of coffee).
