The complete live music lineup for the 35th annual Mudbug Madness Festival has been posted to the festival website, and – as always – it includes many of the biggest names in Cajun and Zydeco music. The 2018 festival, scheduled for May 24-27, will see performances from big names like Wayne Toups & ZydeCajun (9 p.m., Sunday, May 27), Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience (9 p.m., Friday, May 25), and Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers (9 p.m., Thursday, May 24). That’s sort of a murderers’ row of party-friendly Zydeco acts.
On the other hand, the festival will also include performances by well-known Louisiana acts that fall outside of the Zydeco category. There will be sets from “bayou soul” crooner Marc Broussard (9 p.m., Saturday, May 26), high-energy New Orleans funk sextet Flow Tribe (9 p.m., Friday, May 25), and Shreveport’s own “gypsy punk country grumble boogie” outfit Dirtfoot (9 p.m., Thursday, May 24). It’s honestly one of the best Mudbug lineups in recent memory. See the entire lineup here.
If I were asked to recommend one act from this year’s Mudbug Madness Festival to someone who wanted to hear something different, I’d probably recommend Roddie Romero and the Hub City All-Stars (6:30-8:30 p.m., Sunday, May 27). Romero and company are fresh off of two 2016 Grammy nominations (for Best Regional Roots Album and Best American Roots Song). Their sound combines soul, swamp pop, Cajun and other influences into a kind of dreamy, dirt road mash-up of Americana sounds.
