Not only is SUMAS an absolute hidden treasure of a museum, Evans is – in my opinion – one of the most gifted tour guides in Louisiana. At every stop along the tour, Evans immerses tour groups in the sights, sounds and emotions of the African diaspora. Whether she is joyfully encouraging a tour group to call out traditional African greetings or reverently recounting the life and work of Harriet Tubman, Evans brings history to life in a way that only the most talented tour guides can.
After exploring the museum with Evans, participants in this tour will take part in a West African-style drum circle hosted by Geraldine Walker. Finally, attendees will create their own piece of Adinkra art, a traditional West African art form consisting of symbols painted on fabric. The tour is expected to last approximately 90 minutes and all ages are welcome. Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be available at the door. Get tickets here.
