Scratch House Kitchen Puts the ‘Good’ in ‘Baked Goods’

When I asked Monika Thompson, founder of Scratch House Kitchen, why she decided to launch a business that specializes in healthy baked goods in Shreveport, La., I expected to hear about how there aren’t a lot of local options for healthy indulgences. What I heard, instead, was an incredibly personal reflection on Thompson’s recent battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“During my battle and during my recovery, I put myself on a very strict diet,” Thompson said. “I grew up baking traditional baked goods with wheat, butter, dairy and lots of sugar. During my healing, I had to learn new ways to bake.”

As she delved deeper into the relationship between dietary habits and health, Thompson connected with Well+Fed Louisiana. Well+Fed Louisiana is a cold-pressed, organic juice bar located at 678 Egan Street in Shreveport’s Highland neighborhood.

“I’ve learned that there are so many people in town who are battling health issues, or who have kids with egg or dairy allergies with nowhere that they can go to enjoy a sweet treat,” Thompson said. “I’m also a nurse practitioner by trade, so I want to provide this community with options that are good for their body.”

Scratch House Kitchen’s baked goods aren’t just good for you – they’re also just plain good. During a recent visit to Well+Fed Louisiana, I sampled their signature oatmeal cookies as well as a chai-spiced apple hand pie and a cinnamon roll topped with homemade, vegan cream “cheese” icing. That cinnamon roll was one of the tastiest vegan baked goods I’ve ever encountered. It delivered all of the sticky, sweeter-towards-the-center indulgence of an old-fashioned cinnamon roll.

Scratch House Kitchen baked goods are almost always available in the bakery case located at the check-out station at Well + Fed Louisiana. Scratch House also sells baked goods ranging from sourdough bread to scones at local farmers’ markets and events. They’ll be hosting a pop-up shop at the upcoming Great Raft Ramble on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 at Great Raft Brewing. RSVP to the Scratch House Kitchen pop-up at the Great Raft Ramble on Facebook. They’re also appearing at upcoming installments of the Fall 2017 Provenance Farmers Market hosted by the Provenance Community.
