Chef Blake Jackson’s Whisk Dessert Bar is now open at 724 Azalea Drive in Shreveport’s South Highlands neighborhood. Whisk is a chef-driven, dessert-only eatery serving artful pastries, cookies, gelato and other fine desserts. On my first visit to Whisk, I was impressed not only by the quality of menu items like the delicate pecan Pavlova and the dense, velvety chocolate cake called bouchon, but also by the sense that Jackson and his team are having a blast. Team members seemed confident, knowledgeable and excited to be sharing these mind-blowing little treats with the public.

The most impressive-looking item on the plated desserts menu is the doma chocolat, an Instagram-ready sphere of chocolate mousse built on a base of brownie-like bouchon. The best thing that I sampled, however, was the Pavlova, a lighter-than-air pillow of crisp meringue topped with fresh fruit and mascarpone cream. It was one of the best desserts that I’ve eaten locally and felt, somehow, both sensible and decadent at once. There are also outstanding cookies, house-made gelato, and drip and pour-over coffee roasted locally by Lyons Pride Coffee.
Jackson, who won the 2016 Louisiana Food Prize Battle for the Golden Fork, has developed a much higher profile in Shreveport-Bossier’s food community recently. Whether preparing a sold-out dinner during 318 Restaurant Week or partnering with Parish Brewing to serve a beer pairing dinner at Rotolo’s Pizzeria, Jackson seems to be game for anything – as long as it’s fun. And what’s more fun than a restaurant that only serves dessert?
