For me, the appeal of food trucks has always been the excitement of ordering something out-of-the-ordinary, exotic or unique that can’t be eaten anywhere else. In Shreveport-Bossier, Moni’s Brats – a mobile food vendor serving authentic German food – easily ranks among the most “out of the ordinary” options. Since their first outing in 2015, Moni’s has built a following among two kinds of people: folks who’ve never eaten authentic bratwurst, currywurst or schnitzel before and folks who’ve eaten those foods in the past and have longed for the arrival of German food in Shreveport-Bossier.

In an inspired pairing of mobile food vendor and location, Moni’s Brats will debut a new line of schnitzel options at Great Raft Brewing on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 and will serve the schnitzel menu again at the brewery on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016. Moni’s Brats will be on-hand at the brewery both days, 12-9 p.m., and will be serving five different types of schnitzel:

-Schnitzel Platter
-Cordon Bleu Schnitzel (topped with Black Forest ham and Swiss cheese)
-Opa’s Favorite Schnitzel (topped with caramelized onion and bacon)
-Bayern Schnitzel (topped with homemade sauerkraut and Swiss cheese)
-Jäger Schnitzel (topped with mushroom gravy)

If they’re also serving their schnitzel sandwich in addition to these platters, I highly recommend it. The sandwich consists of a tenderized and well-spiced pork tenderloin cutlet fried and served on a bolillo roll (a Mexican bread, not a German one, but a really good fit for the pork tenderloin) with a tart, lemon juice-infused mayo, lettuce and tomatoes. If you’re getting fries on the side, ask for Moni’s curried ketchup to dip them in. Admittedly, schnitzel isn’t the trendiest or sexiest food at the moment, but it’s delicious and authentic stuff. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

All of this is especially good news for folks who love to pair beer with their lunch or dinner. Great Raft Brewing’s most popular beer, the German-style pale lager Southern Drawl, is brewed with German hops. If you’re 21 years of age or older, come out to Great Raft Brewing on Feb. 13 or Feb. 27 and have yourself a mini-Octoberfest.
