Photo Note: Thousands of spectators turn out for the annual Pumpkin Shine on Line.
Presented by the Southfield School for more than two decades, Pumpkin Shine on Line is one of my absolute favorite Halloween events. The 2014 event will be held, 4:30-8:30 p.m., at Betty Virginia Park on Line Avenue in Shreveport. During Pumpkin Shine on Line, thousands of spectators turn out to view hundreds of creative (frequently hilarious) carved and decorated jack-o’-lanterns created by area schoolchildren. As we documented in this post featuring funny pumpkins from the 2013 event, Pumpkin Shine reflects pop culture trends and world events, as interpreted in the medium of pumpkin art by grade school kids. Whether that means pumpkins taking selfies or, as was the case in 2013, approximately 35 pumpkins carved to look like Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty, the results are always fun.

If you’ve never attended a Pumpkin Shine, here’s the low-down: As this helpful post from Southfield School says, the best idea is to park at Mall St. Vincent, near the Dillard’s entrance, and take a free shuttle bus. Admission to the event is free. Concessions (pizza, cold drinks, etc.) are available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting beautification projects at Betty Virginia Park. To enter your own pumpkin, bring your carved or decorated creations to the park between 2-4 p.m.
