Why We Love Herby-K’s, In Six Photos by Jim Noetzel

As a part of my job at the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau (the folks who make this blog possible), one of my regular responsibilities is helping journalists secure high-quality photos of area landmarks, restaurants, events, etc. One of the places I am most frequently asked for photos of is Herby-K’s, a local seafood restaurant that’s been run by the same family since 1936. Last night, I asked photographer Jim Noetzel to help me get some new photos of the iconic local restaurant.

As Jim bounced around the tiny restaurant taking photos, I talked with group after group of diners who were visitors from out of town. “I came all the way from Houston for these fried pickles,” one nice lady told me. The trio of local friends with whom she was dining didn’t seem too insulted by the remark. Two doctors, still in scrubs, took seats on bar stools and ordered shrimp busters with extra onion rings. “Not cardiologists, I’m guessing,” someone remarked from a booth behind me.

Here are six reasons why we love Herby-K’s, as captured by photographer Jim Noetzel.

Oysters on Tuesday night. Herby-K’s receives oyster deliveries on Tuesdays, and theirs are some of the best that I’ve ever tasted.

Out-of-towners eating the Shrimp Buster! It’s always fun eavesdropping as first-timers figure out how to eat this unusual take on the fried shrimp po-boy.

Goblets. Beer, as well as the house specialty cocktail called the Pink Flamingo (pictured here), are served in heavy, icy goblets at Herby-K’s.

Gnarly-looking po-boys. I prefer a po-boy to look like it’ll eat me if I don’t eat it first. This oyster po-boy from Herby-K’s is a good example.

  1. Herby K’s is awesome! I am so glad someone is promoting this place! The food is amazing and the prices are modest!

  2. These pics made me want a Herby-K’s oyster poboy SOOOO bad!!! (And I’m in NYC where there’s nothing even close to being as good!)

  3. Ask for tartar sauce to go with your Buster. Much better than the red sauce that comes standard with it.

I’m not ordinarily a big tartar sauce fan, but theirs is outstanding.

    Anyone know the recipe?

    1. I would love the recipe for the tartar sauce, too! It is the best I have ever eat. Ate there Monday and had the delicious Baby Shrimp Buster. You gotta go.

  4. Thank y’all so much for reading and commenting. We LOVE some Herby-K’s – the food, the atmosphere, the people. We just wanted to share these photos because we loved how they came out – thanks, again, for the great feedback.
