It’s not easy staying relevant in today’s fast-paced world where cell phones are considered outdated after a year, stars are only as hot as their latest iTunes single or YouTube video and the path to success is paved with a gazillion tweets.
Yet, some treasures manage to stay alive and thrive, like the Friends of the Barnwell, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
Through the years, the Barnwell has brought some of the best in art and horticulture, earning local, regional and state artists sales of more than $21,000 just last year for original works.
But, the Barnwell isn’t just about plants and pictures. From their eye-popping annual Holiday Laser Light Show to their sizzling Hot Jazz on the Red spring series, the Barnwell Center continues to provide fun, free entertaining programming for people of all ages.
In fact, last year more than 40,000 visitors passed through, not even including special arts receptions, club meetings and Friends-sponsored events.
So, if you’ve been under a rock and have yet to make your first visit, consider stopping by this weekend in celebration of their third decade in Shreveport-Bossier. While you’re there, check out some of their latest exhibit which features works by Emily & Tom Pressley and their daughter Catherine Herring in the Main gallery; Sam Rigling in the Corridor Gallery and Cory Pickett in the Wafe Gallery.
An opening reception for these new exhibits is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19. Check out the Shreveport-Bossier Fun Guide learn more about other events happening at the Barnwell.
