Friday the 13th fun

Yeah, it’s the date that horror movies and superstitions are made of, but this Friday the 13th is anything but scary with all the fun, different events going on in the area. So, turn your luck around and check out what’s in store:

Theater

The Sound of MusicFor theater lovers, there’s two productions going on and they’re all about music. Shreveport Little Theatre brings the Rodgers & Hammerstein-turned-Disney-classic, The Sound of Music, to the stage with community theater all-star cast, including Anna Maria Sparke Keele, Seva May, Tom Serio and Meade Patton. Nearby, the music theme plays on at the Emmett Hook Center, where First United Methodist Church will debut its summer production of another Broadway favorite-turned-hit-movie, Meredith Willson’s The Music Man.

Music

Beauty in ChaosIf you like some bowling with your live music, stop by Tunes & Ten Pins, a weekly concert series at Holiday Lanes bowling center, featuring rockabilly trio Dragstrip Phantoms in concert. Later on, drop the kids off and swing through downtown Shreveport at 11 p.m. for Free Friday at Mojo’s featuring local rock band Beauty in Chaos and folk/acoustic band Street Corner Press, as well as Jacksonville, Fla. band Memphibians. (For age 21 and older).

Movies

The Breakfast ClubGrab your sleeping bag and head to the Robinson Film Center for a night of nostalgia with 80s Sleepover, which includes a triple feature of pop cult faves Nightmare on Elm Street, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club, a dance upstairs and a pizza party in Abby Singer’s Bistro. The party will go until 4 a.m. Guests are encouraged to dress for the occasion, including neon leg warmers, rolled-cuff jeans, teased hair, the Thriller jacket and more. (Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.)

Family fun

Discover your inner percussionist at the Pamoja Drum Circle, where performers gather to play a variety of instruments, including the djembe drum, djundjun drum, shekere rattle and ago bell. The performers then invite the audience to join in and play the instruments. Admission is free.  After that, take the kids for a free cool at the Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation’s 2012 City-Wide Ice Cream Blowout. Enjoy free ice cream, music and fun from 4 to 7 p.m.  at one of the area’s 14 SPAR centers.
