Tim’s Southern Sno: Park Straight and Carry a Big Snowcone

The heat of July in the Great State of Louisiana, if not properly dealt with, has been known to send otherwise sensible people into fits of misbehavior. The best cure for these fits is prevention, and the best form of prevention may just be snow cones.

Just like everything else in Shreveport-Bossier, the unique people who operate these shacks make each one different from the next. While there are lots of fantastic snow cones and snowballs to be had in Shreveport-Bossier, a personal favorite is the weird, popular Tim’s Southern Sno (5760 Youree Drive, Shreveport).

Trust us: It's in your best interest to park straight at Tim's Southern Sno.

First things first: Park straight. You’re going to see several signs asking that you do so (some are typeset in the style of Haiku poetry!). How you park is important because Tim’s is kind of a hopping place around 2 p.m. Customers are often lined up six-deep at the window, eyeballing the menu and looking increasingly crazy-eyed.

Secondly, take a look at the sizes before you order. The small at Tim’s Southern Sno weighs in at 12 ozs. The medium (16 oz.) is really what I would personally think of as an extra large snow cone, and the large snow cone (a 32 oz. schooner) is so large that it could more accurately be described as a bucket than as a cone.

Finally, the flavors: Here you’ll encounter spearmint, strawberry daiquiri, dreamsicle, snow angel and polar pop, as well as about 50 other flavors. You can only get one flavor per cone (like straight parking, this is a hard-and-fast rule), a fact that has drawn the ire of countless kids over the years. But kids in the know (and adults who still eat like kids) order their snow cone with sweet cream added. It more than makes up for the disappointment of only being allowed one flavor, and makes it possible to venture back out into the heat and be well-behaved.

Tim’s Southern Sno is open from 12-8 p.m. and is located at 5760 Youree Drive in Shreveport. Prices range from $1.50-3.50, plus tax (and any extra charges for cream).
