One of my favorite places to visit growing up in Shreveport-Bossier was the historic Strand Theatre, located at 619 Louisiana Avenue. Before I was tall enough to peak into the orchestra pit my mom took me to see performances like Les Miserables and Cats at the breath-taking theatre which has been recognized nationally as one of the top five glitziest theatres for live performance anywhere in the country.
As the Official State Theatre of Louisiana the Strand has remained a community favorite and a steadfast staple despite once closing in the late 70’s and recent economic hard times. The Strand, once threatened by demolition and financial bust boasts beautiful exterior detail and exquisite interior design that was restored before its reopening in 1984 and a community that has rallied to save and preserve it time and time again.
The Theatre has hosted some of the most famous Broadway traveling shows throughout the years, and it has been the stage for numerous local productions. Nest Tuesday, March 6, the Strand presents Monty Python’s “SPAMALOT“. The 2005 Tony Award-winning play is described as an outrageous new musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the film classic “Monty Python and The Holy Grail.” The play sold out when it last came to the area in December 2010.
