I was lucky enough to marry into a Cajun family from the Lafayette area, and, for the most part, that’s turned out to be a good thing. They know how to eat, they party like there’s no tomorrow, and they love to share. The only downside? Every time I go visit my in-laws, I have to pack two empty ice chests to fill with specialty meats from Acadiana for my Shreveport-Bossier friends. Stuffed chickens, fresh-made Cajun pork sausage, homemade boudin, crawfish pies – these are things I’ve transported tons of in the last three years of marriage. I’m happy to report that my days of bootlegging boudin are behind me. Today, I discovered Mojo’s Cajun Meats, located at 6361 Buncombe Road in Shreveport.
Any Cajun specialty meats shop needs to offer a huge variety of deboned, stuffed fowl, and Mojo’s doesn’t disappoint. They offer nine different kinds of stuffed chicken, including boudin-stuffed, crawfish and rice dressing-stuffed, and jalapeno cornbread dressing-stuffed options. The same nine varieties can also be purchased as turkeys. Stuffed chickens start at $12.95, stuffed turkeys start at $39.
Also on the menu: boudin balls, puff pastry pies including shrimp, crawfish, and meat pie varieties, the legendary turducken, gumbos, soups, and etouffees, etc. The menu is an interesting read, so I scanned it and posted a .PDF document here.
It’s best to call before making the trip to ensure that what you’re craving is in stock, and the family who run the shop (the Meauxs, originally of Kaplan, LA) are happy to set aside the items you’re looking for or prepare special orders.
