In case you haven’t guessed, I’m not exactly the “health food store type.” Most months out of the year, I’m more likely to be found across the street from Sunshine Health Foods at Tim’s Southern Sno (best snow cones in town!) than inside of the popular health food store and deli. But with the New Year right around the corner, post-holiday guilt often drives me to spend at least a few weeks making healthy eating choices. In other words: I will be eating at Sunshine a lot in January. Thank goodness this stuff is so good that my taste buds won’t know I’m eating healthy.
Located at 5751 Youree Drive in Shreveport, Sunshine offers up an organic salad bar as well as a deli case featuring favorites like their spinach lasagna (pictured above) and black bean enchiladas. Sandwiches and paninis are popular with the lunch crowd, with the turkey avocado sandwich being the landslide favorite among customers I surveyed. During my recent lunch hour visit, easily 75% of the dining room was eating this sandwich. I negotiated a bite from a friend’s sandwich and it was really delicious – the guacamole was especially unique, rich and a little bit spicy.
Most folks here seem like regulars. People drift from table to table, shaking hands and pinching cheeks. The prices are surprisingly low for a health food deli (my spinach lasagna was $3.99). It may be a diner inside a health food store, but it’s still a diner. And I mean that as a compliment.
Sunshine Health Foods in Shreveport is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. For more information, call (318) 219-4080. They also have a Bossier City location, at 3011 Airline Drive.
