Weekend Pick: Country-rapper Colt Ford at the Red River Revel

On his song “Chicken and Biscuits,” country rapper Colt Ford lyricizes about his girlfriend in a way that I think we can all relate to: “It ain’t nothing like my backwoods baby/she drives a tractor/she drives me crazy.” Okay, so maybe we don’t all have tractor-driving girlfriends. But Colt Ford’s bizarre and crowd-pleasing blend of Dirty South rap set to country music is something that must be heard to be appreciated. On paper, it just sounds like it would never work. But the larger-than-life Ford makes it work.

Ford is perhaps best known to country music fans as the original writer and performer of “Dirt Road Anthem,” popular versions of which have been recorded by country stars Jason Aldean and Brantley Gilbert. His latest album is called “Every Chance I Get,” featuring the single “She Likes to Ride in Trucks.” For newcomers to his sound (and persona), I’d recommend checking out the video for “Waste Some Time.” Colt Ford will perform at the Red River Revel Arts Festival on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m., the festival’s closing headliner.
