Mardi Gras… Do It North Louisiana Style

There was a time many years ago when I thought Mardi Gras was a national holiday much like Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July. Of course, now I realize that there are some who don’t know how satisfying it is to catch the ultimate bead, and there are others who have never indulged in decadent King Cake. I grew up expecting to leave the parades with mounds of beads around my neck, and bragging rights went to whoever collected the most. While bead-catching was always highly anticipated, I could not wait to see krewe royalty atop glorious floats wearing costumes made of vibrant crystals and plumes.
Now through February 26, at the Barnwell Garden and Art Center, located at 601 Clyde Fant Parkway, Mardi Gras fanatics can get up close and personal with some of the most flamboyant Carnival costumes in Northwest Louisiana. Everything from krewe memorabilia to crowns, scepters and magnificent headpieces will be featured in the exhibit titled, “Mardi Gras…Do it North Louisiana Style.” The exhibit also features Mardi Gras-themed artwork from local and regional artists. Exhibit hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday-Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday; and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
