***UPDATE: The Art & Soul Experience planned for Saturday, May 19 has been canceled.***
Have you ever been on a guided tour that so exceeded your expectations that you couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks? I have, and it was right here in Shreveport-Bossier – at the Southern University Museum of Art in Shreveport. I’d previously visited the museum, which houses a relatively small but high-quality collection of African and African-American art, and I didn’t really know what to expect from the “interactive experience” offered by Museum Coordinator Angelique Feaster Evans. The Art & Soul Experience, which will be offered again this Saturday, May 19, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m., turned out to be way more than a tour. There’s a living history interpreter, a drum circle, and even an Adinkra art-making class. Cost to attend is $20 and tickets may be purchased here.
The thing that makes this tour so special is simple: the tour guide is outstanding. Angelique Feaster Evans narrates the African diaspora – from Africa through slavery, Jim Crow, and into modern life in the South – with passion and a deep reservoir of personal knowledge. Especially for those who have not previously explores the SUMAS museum, this tour is the optimal way to get to know it. The tour concludes with a drum circle as well as a hands-on experience with making art in the style of the Adinkra cultures of West Africa. As someone who has led many tours, I can tell you that it is difficult to be both engaging and educational for 90 minutes. Angelique Feaster Evans is very good at it.
The Art & Soul Experience is being offered on Saturday, May 19 as part of Be a Fan of Shreveport-Bossier, a month-long celebration of Shreveport’s tourism and hospitality industry.
