Shreveport native and acclaimed jazz drummer Brian Blade has had one heck of a year. As a member of the Chick Corea Trio, he won a Grammy Award in February (“Best Jazz Instrumental Album”) and his own album, recorded in Shreveport with his heralded Fellowship Band, was also nominated for the same Grammy. He’s toured the world as a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet and continued to build upon his reputation as one of the world’s leading jazz drummers.
On Friday, Dec. 18 and Saturday, Dec. 19, Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band will perform in Shreveport. One performance is a fundraiser with a $250 ticket price; the other is a public concert at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum with $30 tickets. Proceeds from both concerts will benefit Shreveport House Concerts, Inc., a local not-for-profit concert series that organizer Alan Dyson calls “a sit-down listening experience for people who are interested in hearing the words.” Tickets to both events can be purchased on the Shreveport House Concert Series website.
“Brian plays in Japan, Europe…he’s probably the most sought-after jazz drummer in the world,” Dyson told me. “He came to a Shreveport House Concert Series event a while back, and said: ‘Why don’t we play a show that benefits you?’ This was their idea; that’s the kind of generosity that they’ve displayed.”
Dyson is also excited about the venue of the Dec. 19 public concert, which will be taking place inside of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum‘s 330-seat auditorium. Built in 1938 in a unique modernist style, the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum is considered by many to be one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Louisiana.
“It’s been recently renovated, and it’s pristine,” Dyson said of the auditorium. “Good friends who’ve played there before, people like (Grammy-nominated blues guitarist) Buddy Flett, can’t say enough good things about the acoustics.”
Whether you’re a hardcore jazz lover or just a casual music fan, these upcoming concerts should make for one of the more memorable live music experiences of 2015.
